MP concerned over job losses at BAE Systems

26 November 2009

Mike Hancock, MP (Liberal Democrat - Portsmouth South) has expressed his concern at the announcement of up to 642 job losses by BAE Systems Integrated System Technologies (Insyte) - including 220 at their Broad Oak site in Portsmouth. He is asking for a meeting with the firm to discuss the job losses and the implications. He is also asking the City Council and the Government to do look at what they can to try and prevent the losses and also to support those who may unfortunately be made redundant.

Mike Hancock said: "This is worrying news for Portsmouth coming at a time of increasing unemployment - particularly as the city has a higher rate of people out of work than the rest of the South. I am asking for a meeting with the company to discuss this and to see whether anything can be done to prevent these job losses. I am also asking Portsmouth City Council to see whether there is anything that they can do on this - especially to support those made redundant. I also hope that the Government will look also to make support available and also see whether there are any contracts or work they can bring forward."

Commenting, Stephen Williams said:

“This is a very popular idea which would give the public something back for bailing out the banks.

“I welcome the Treasury Select Committee’s review into what to do with the Government’s holding in RBS and Lloyds and hope that it furthers the case for giving the public their share.”
