MP welcomes MOD statement on Portsmouth Naval Base

06 May 2009

Mike Hancock has welcomed news in a statement today by the Armed Forces minister that Portsmouth will now be home, subject to investments decisions to the new class of frigates, known as the Future Surface Combatant (FSC).

The naval base is in Mike Hancock's constituency and Mike is also a member of the Defence Select Committee.

Mike said: "This looks to be very good news indeed for Portsmouth. It is a great tribute to all those that work at the Naval Base, the Navy itself, the dockyard and their commercial partners and they are all to be congratulated on this news. I consistently argued at the time of the review of Naval bases that Portsmouth had great strengths and this decision today re-inforces that view. The naval base is particularly important to the city in these difficult economic times and I believe it will go from strength to strength due to the hard work of those employed there. But all three major naval bases also need to continue to work together as I believe that there is a complementary role for all of them."

Commenting, Stephen Williams said:

“This is a very popular idea which would give the public something back for bailing out the banks.

“I welcome the Treasury Select Committee’s review into what to do with the Government’s holding in RBS and Lloyds and hope that it furthers the case for giving the public their share.”
