MP to vote for crackdown on power station CO2 emissions
Mike Hancock, MP (Portsmouth South - Lib Dem) has said that he will be voting for a crackdown on carbon emissions from power stations when the Energy Bill is debated by MP in the House of Commons, tomorrow Wednesday 24th February.
A new cross-party clause has been tabled by the Liberal Democrats, Labour backbenchers and the Conservatives and will introduce an "Emissions Performance Standard" for the first time. This will set a legal limit for the amount of carbon dioxide that a power station could emit per unit of energy produced.
Mike Hancock said: "The Government have dragged their feet on this and I would have liked us to have gone further sooner. It is clear that if we are to avoid the effects of global warming we will have to have much less CO2 from power stations. Any new coal fired power stations should be "clean coal" with carbon capture and storage. The Lib Dems would have liked to have had stricter limits than this cross-party amendment introduces but it is a golden opportunity to establish an Emissions Performance Standard for the first time. And I hope that the Government and MPs across the political spectrum will support this new clause so that we can get to grips with the problem of global warming."
