MP welcomes Pompey court win

05 August 2010

Mike Hancock, MP (Lib Dem - Portsmouth South) has welcomed news that Portsmouth Football Club have won their high court battle with the HM Revenue and Customs. The club's stadium at Fratton Park is in his constituency.

Mike said: "I am very pleased that the court has struck out HMRC's appeal against the club's CVA. While it is obviously appropriate that HMRC should look carefully at tax affairs of individual businesses, they did seem to me to be treating Pompey unfairly compared to other football clubs. And it seems that court has agreed that their action was without merit. A football club is not just another business but a key part of the community. I am also pleased that HMRC has decided not to appeal the court's decision.

"It has obviously been a difficult and turbulent time for Pompey. I hope that this will see a new beginning for the club and the start of a successful season in the Championship. I met with supporters a few days ago. And I am sure that fans and everyone in the city will get behind the club for the coming season which will obviously be very important. There are, of course, still issues to be resolved but I will continue to do all that I can as an MP to support the club."

“This is a very popular idea which would give the public something back for bailing out the banks.

“I welcome the Treasury Select Committee’s review into what to do with the Government’s holding in RBS and Lloyds and hope that it furthers the case for giving the public their share.”
