Mike Hancock against re-location of Children’s Heart Services to Bristol.
Â
Mike Hancock, MP for Portsmouth South, says proposals to move surgical services for children with congenital heart problems to the Westcountry should be scrapped. And the MP has also tabled Parliamentary questions to the Department of Health to attempt to find the justifications behind the move.
Â
Mike is calling on Andrew Lansley to step in and save the Children's Services at Southampton General Hospital, which has been rated as providing the country's highest quality service outside London. These proposals have been made, despite the fact hospital practices such as management of paediatric intensive care, supporting parents with information and choice and training and innovation were all identified as exemplary. Mike said, "I find these proposals extraordinary. They seem to not have taken into consideration several key issues and I can't believe they will result in positive outcomes for local children with congenital heart problems. What are patients living on the Isle of Wight or the Channel Islands to do? I fully support the opinion of Hampshire County Council against these proposals."
Â
Since March, when surgery was suspended in Oxford, Southampton General has taken on the majority of cases in the Central South region, and from the start there have been joint management teams. Southampton general has operated on over 110 children in 2010/11.
