Unemployment in Portsmouth South

21 June 2011

Contents below (please note personal information has been removed from the email).

This is a personalised email from the House of Commons Library consisting of new constituency unemployment figures for May 2011 which were published today at 9.30am by the Office for National Statistics.

The number of unemployed claimants in Portsmouth South constituency in May 2011 was 2,896. This represents a rate of 5.5% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, the 241st highest of the 650 UK constituencies. The number of claimants is 137 lower than in May 2010 and 71 lower than in April 2011. These data are not seasonally adjusted.

The Library's monthly research paper, Unemployment by Constituency, will be published later today. It contains detailed analysis of labour market statistics and trends.

Further data, including constituency profiles, are available on the Office for National Statistics' NOMIS website. In addition, the ONS publish a monthly Labour Market Statistics Bulletin. Note that the percentages published by the ONS show claimants as a percentage of the population aged 16 to 64, rather than the number of economically active aged 16 to 64 as in the Library figures.

Commenting, Stephen Williams said:

“This is a very popular idea which would give the public something back for bailing out the banks.

“I welcome the Treasury Select Committee’s review into what to do with the Government’s holding in RBS and Lloyds and hope that it furthers the case for giving the public their share.”
