Mike Hancock welcomes News Corp’s decision to withdraw BSkyB bid

13 July 2011

Local MP, Mike Hancock, has welcomed reports of News Corp's withdrawal of the BSkyB takeover bid, calling it a triumph for people power. He also praised the political parties' ability to come together to debate and form a consensus over the issue which had gained wide ranging cross-party support.

The news comes after recent revelations that the News of the World had hacked the phones of Milly Dowler, the parents of murdered Soham schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman as well as victims of the 7/7 attacks.

Mike said, "These disclosures called into question not only Rupert Murdoch's suitability for the takeover of BSkyB, but also his current monopoly of the British media. The withdrawal of the bid has brought forward the opportunity to secure and strengthen an independent, neutral and pluralist media system."

Yet, with more revelations coming to light, Mike has stated that he is fully committed to ensuring that pressure is continuously applied to the Government to bring about full public inquiry into hacking and to ensure that News Corp is held to account for its deplorable actions.

Commenting, Stephen Williams said:

“This is a very popular idea which would give the public something back for bailing out the banks.

“I welcome the Treasury Select Committee’s review into what to do with the Government’s holding in RBS and Lloyds and hope that it furthers the case for giving the public their share.”
