Hancock Kicks Off with School Games Drive
Mike Hancock today wrote to schools in Portsmouth to support the School Games programme - the latest initiative from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. The scheme aims to boost the existing work in school sport and will run until next summer, with a year-round calendar of competition for pupils of all abilities.
This promises to be an exciting curtain-raiser for the Olympics and Paralympics themselves - and it means talented athletes within our schools can set their sights on becoming among the first to compete in the main 2012 venues next year.
Mike said, "This is an excellent programme and one that I hope many school in the area will sign up to. It will encourage many local children to take up sports, many of which they may not have previously tried, regardless of ability and offer the opportunity to compete in Olympic-standard venues. I hope this scheme can signal the start of a new generation of British athletes."
