600 job vacancies up for grabs at event in Portsmouth
Over 600 jobs will be available to Portsmouth residents, thanks to a job opportunities event held on Thursday 29 September from 10am to 4.30pm at Cascades Shopping Centre.
Employers looking to recruit include: The Marriott, Capita, Affinion, The Listening Company, Toys R Us, Handle with Care, the TA, Game, Primark, ASDA, TK Maxx, Tui and Morrisons. The Information Advice and Guidance Centre on Arundel Street will provide support to people completing applications on the day.
The event run by Portsmouth City Council, Jobcentre Plus, Cascades, The News, A4E, CDG and Maximus, aims to support those who are out of work. Help will be on hand from advisors to gain new skills, build confidence, and overcome financial barriers.
Councillor Mike Hancock, Cabinet Member for Planning, Regeneration and Economic Development said: "This event demonstrates a fantastic opportunity for the residents of Portsmouth.
"Following the recent troubling unemployment figures it is great to see that employers are creating new jobs and those companies are willing to invest in the area. Portsmouth is on the up and very much open for business."
Before attending the event, people are encouraged to update their CV or take advantage of free job hunting advice.
Portsmouth City Council has created three work and learning shops one morning a week, giving people free internet access, help with developing CVs and information on the local labour market. People can attend groups for eight weeks and have use of a computer for one-and-a-half hours. There are also advisors available to help people plan for individual job searches.
Linda Taylor, Portsmouth City Council's employment initiatives manager said: "It is very important that people looking for work stay focused and put time and energy into their efforts. Sometimes family and friends make demands on people who are not working like shopping and helping out in the home or with children. People looking for work should set aside time to surf the internet for jobs, upload their CVs to job recruitment websites, complete application forms and speak to contacts who can signpost them to jobs."
